The World Beach List was launched in 2005 as a project based on my interest in travel to beaches around the world. The site grew a bit but stagnated until it was rewritten in 2010. After that, some other priorities took over and the site again stagnated and suffered from serious code rot. Eventually it went down completely due to an ISP migration issue. With the pandemic, time again became available and the third incarnation of the World Beach List is ready to launch.

This is another ground up rewrite of the entire code base behind the site. It also does a complete replacement of the underlying data that was used to seed locations and towns around the world. Part of that new set of data includes beaches, hotels, and even a few restaurants around the world. The benefit of this is the list of beaches has grown from around 3,000 to over 16,000! There are even more hotels but only those hotels near beaches are being included in the list. The new site is mobile friendly with a responsive layout so you can use it at home or on the go.

Along the way, some data providers have been lost being that they no longer support access from other applications. Some new providers have been added in (such as for weather), and more should come in the future.

Keep an eye out for improvements over time. As always, suggestions are welcome and encouraged. The easiest way is to start a new topic in the Beach Talk forum.

With luck, we will all be out of our homes in a few more months and able to enjoy the beach again. Get ready by exploring the world and picking out the perfect spot to visit. Until that vacation, good luck and stay safe.
